It’s spring and the PCS season is nearly upon us. Military moves are very expensive, and the dislocation allowance disappears quickly. Consider taking the 8% Challenge to build up a significant emergency fund as you move to your next duty station.
The principle is that if you save 8% of your take-home pay each month you can build up a three month emergency fund in a three-year tour. Add this to additional retirement savings and you can quickly reach your financial goals.
Your emergency fund can also help you defray the expenses surrounding a PCS move without having to take a pay advance. These advances are attractive because they are interest free, but you’ll likely regret it months into the repayment schedule.
Good luck with your move and tell us what you learned about the financial challenges of PCS-ing!
